NASA have ambitious plans to send even more sophisticated devices to the surface of the “red planet.” On the next mission to Mars they will use a new generation of space rovers. Representatives of the agency have now shown for the first time how the spacecraft that will launch the machines and other equipment on the planet in 2020 will look like. The updated rover will be equipped with even more precise tools to explore the surface of Mars.
The facility will be optimized to run for at least one Martian year, equivalent to 687 days. The main priority for the Mars 2020 mission will be the rocks and soils of the “red” planet. The new rovers will be equipped with sophisticated tools that can not only drill the surfaces, but also analyze the samples themselves. NASA plans do not foresee returning them to Earth, but they will test equipment that could allow it to happen in future missions.
Scientists praised that they have assembled the spacecraft for the first time to complete the mission. Their tests include a replica of a car-sized rover. In this way, NASA checks the actual dimensions of the machine, which is not yet constructed. Inside the spacecraft there are special coatings that will protect the rover from possible defects during the flight. The space launch is planned for July 2020, and only seven months later it plans to land in the Jezero Crater area on Mars.
